World Down Syndrome Day

Happy World Down Syndrome Day!

What is Down syndrome?

Down syndrome is a developmental disability where someone is born with an extra copy of chromosome 21. It is the most common chromosomal condition, affecting approximately one in every 700-800 people in the United States. Some common characteristics of Down syndrome include low muscle tone, a slightly flattened facial profile, an upward slant to the eyes, cognitive differences, and a single deep palm crease, however, every individual with Down syndrome is unique.

Music Therapy and Down Syndrome

Music therapists can work with individuals with Down syndrome. Potential goals can include working on fine motor skills while playing various instruments including piano or guitar, working on gross motor skills with movement to music, working on speech skills through singing with clear enunciation, working on cognitive skills by memorizing lyrics or recognizing and repeating patterns in the music, and working on communication skills by learning sign language to favorite songs. Each music therapy session is designed and individualized to each client’s strengths and needs, and the possibilities are endless. At Musical Bridges, we love making music with our music therapy clients and our lessons students with Down syndrome.

How can we celebrate?

There are many ways to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day. You can spread the word with others, fundraise, donate, learn their stories, share their stories, post on social media, attend an event, listen and learn from people with Down syndrome, and participate in the #LotsOfSocks campaign. The #LotsOfSocks campaign is to raise awareness and get people talking about Down syndrome. On March 21st, wear your wildest, most colorful, mismatched, definitely noticeable socks. When anyone comments on them, you can tell them “I am wearing them to raise awareness of Down syndrome.” How fun! Any way you can participate is great!
