4th of July Firework Show Sensory Tips

The 4th of July is almost here! And with this holiday comes the beautiful, yet loud firework shows. Loud noises and bright lights can be difficult for a lot of people but especially for our friends who have serious sensory awareness. We here at Musical Bridges have put together a list of must haves for firework shows, including a fun song to sing on the way!

The main contender in sensory overload at fireworks shows would have to be how loud they are! If you are heading to a fireworks display or hearing the neighbors personal show next door look into sound dampening headphones! These are great not only for everyday use but spectacular for seriously loud events such as concerts and of course fireworks. Here is a link to some of our favorite headphones here!

While it might not seem like a potential issue, the fireworks might be too bright as well! Pop on some sunglasses to minimize the overall effect and still enjoy the colorful show. Since the amount of people attending might cause some stress, bringing some comfort items can help reduce the strain. Go ahead and bring weighted lap pads, favorite fidgets, and anything else an individual enjoys and helps them keep calm!

Prepare your child for what is about to happen. Let them know that it might be a little loud, bright, and/or busy. You know your child best, give an appropriate amount of a heads up so that they feel prepared and safe for the show! And as a little something that might make the drive to the fireworks show a little bit more fun, try out this piggyback song that reminds an individual they have the tools to remain calm and that they will have a great time! This song will get stuck in your head as much as the original. Keep it going and it’ll be the firework song that never ends!

Science Behind Sensory Regulation in Neurologic Music Therapy

At Musical Bridges, our certified Neurologic Music Therapists use specific, research-backed techniques to work towards individual goals. This can and does include sensory regulation and building a personalized toolkit of strategies that work for a specific individual.

For example, Auditory Perception Training (APT®) uses musical exercises to integrate different sensory modalities such as visual, tactile, and kinesthetic input to assist in regulating an individual’s nervous system.

Another technique, Musical Mnemonics Training (MMT® )uses songs and rhythms to enhance learning and memory. This approach can help individuals absorb and retain important regulation strategies, making it easier to access those tools when they need them most.
