FAQs

What is Music Therapy?

Music therapy is a clinical and evidence-based practice that uses music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship. It is conducted by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program. Musical Bridges practices Neurologic Music Therapy, a specialized form of music therapy requiring additional training. While general music therapy can address a wide range of therapeutic goals, NMT specifically targets the brain functions that control movements, speech, and cognitive processes. It uses research-based techniques designed to stimulate brain functions and promote neuroplasticity to improve neurological health.

What are the benefits of Music Therapy and who can take advantage of them?

Music therapy is beneficial for people of all ages and various conditions, including developmental disorders, medical illnesses, psychiatric disorders, physical impairments, sensory impairments, developmental delays, and those undergoing rehabilitation. NMT is particularly beneficial for individuals with neurological impairments resulting from conditions such as stroke, traumatic brain injury, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, multiple sclerosis, and cerebral palsy. It aims to help regain and improve motor function, speech, and cognitive abilities.

Why is there an urgent need for funding?

In Tennessee, the need for funding music therapy is particularly urgent due to limited insurance coverage and inadequate state support. Currently, music therapy is not covered by insurance policies, making it inaccessible for many who could benefit from it but cannot afford to pay out of pocket. Additionally, the state waiver programs are burdened with a long waitlist. Funding is critically needed to bridge these gaps, providing essential therapy services to those in need without the financial strain and ensuring that more individuals can receive the therapeutic benefits of music therapy without undue delay.

Where does the money go when I donate?

When you donate to our music therapy programs, your contribution is initially deposited into our bank account, where it joins a pool of funds dedicated solely to supporting our therapeutic activities. These funds are then carefully allocated in two primary ways:

  1. Individual Scholarships: A significant portion of donations is directed towards scholarships that allow individuals who cannot afford therapy to participate. These scholarships ensure that financial barriers do not prevent anyone from benefiting from music therapy. To apply for a scholarship, click here.

  2. Group Classes: Funds are also used to cover the costs of group therapy sessions, making them available at little to no cost to participants. This enables us to serve many more people and foster a community environment conducive to healing.

How can I donate other than monetarily?

Volunteering your time to help with our sessions or events is another fantastic way to contribute. You can also offer your expertise by providing services such as marketing, legal advice, or administrative support. You can join our board of directors! You can donate musical instruments or equipment that are in good condition, which are always needed and appreciated. Lastly, promoting our cause through word-of-mouth or on social media can greatly increase our reach and impact. All forms of support are invaluable to our efforts and help us continue to provide these essential services.
