I Want Candy! - Halloween Social Story and More

October is here and that means spooky season is too! All of us here at Musical Bridges love Halloween and all of the fun that comes with it. How to add in seasonal and holiday fun to our Music Therapy sessions is always on our minds, Halloween has an abundance of fun songs and games to incorporate. Our team has created a few resources to help make Trick-or-Treating a treat along with a few more fun Halloween themed activities you can try out at home!

Trick-or-Treat Pumpkin

Trick-or-treating can be intimidating to anyone, both parents and kids. There are many factors involved that could potentially cause an individual to be uncomfortable including a costume, talking to strangers, scary decorations, and more. We have put together a social story that discusses some of the factors of trick-or-treating. In the story costumes, other children, and even ringing a doorbell have been included. Take time to introduce the different facets in trick-or-treating to prepare your kiddo to have a fun filled Halloween!

Ms. Proctor has written a Halloween song to help with trick-or-treating as well! This spooky song goes through the steps of trick-or-treating and some spooky costumes you might see. This song works on expressive language, sequencing, and social skills all in regard to Halloween night. You can learn the song below from Ms. Proctor herself or send us a message for a copy of the lyrics. We will be using this catchy tune all October long to get the steps and language for Halloween night in our therapy clients toolkit!

“Knock, knock, knock, trick-or-treat!”

Our therapists have tons of Halloween visuals, songs, books, and games. One of our activities involves pulling out our cauldron and making some Halloween Stew! In this activity we work on motor skills, “wh” questions, language, sequencing, and of course having fun along the way! This activity can be used with individuals or in a group setting. Each addition to the stew adds a new item to the songs sequence. The chant could continue on for however long you want, adding in sounds and motions to go with the added ingredients. At the end of the tune try to see if your kiddo can remember each ingredient you added with a “wh” question.

Ooh, ooh, ooh, let’s make Halloween stew.

Ooh, ooh, ooh, let’s stir our witches brew!

Let’s add a bat, flap, flap, flap x2

Let’s add a pumpkin, roll, roll, roll x2

Let’s add a ghost, boo, boo, boo x2

Let’s add a toad, hop, hop, hop

Ooh, ooh, ooh, let’s make Halloween stew.

Ooh, ooh, ooh, let’s drink our witches brew!

Gulp, gulp, gulp

Children with a Cauldron
