For others, we hope these definitions give you an overview of Neurologic Music Therapy. Please reach out to us to learn more.
An Introduction to the Katie Beckett Waiver in Tennessee
The first Katie Beckett waiver was implemented in 1981 after President Ronald Reagan was inspired by the story of Katie Beckett. She was a young girl in Iowa who developed a brain infection when she was 5 months old which led to her being paralyzed and spending three years in the hospital. After the hard work of many advocates, the Katie Beckett program launched in Tennessee in November 2020 and is available for ages 1-18.

Do you need a college degree to practice Music Therapy?
YES- Of course!
However, we get asked this question all the time. Many people do not realize that Music Therapy is a bachelor’s degree, offered in over 70 colleges and universities in the United States. Many of these programs also have Masters and Doctorate level programs.
Neurologic Music Therapy- What does it mean, and how can we benefit?
Earlier this year, our owner, Ms. Melissa, completed a 4-day intensive training in Neurologic Music Therapy. Neurologic Music Therapy (NMT) is the therapeutic application of music to cognitive, sensory, and motor dysfunctions due to neurologic disease of the human nervous system (Thaut, 1999).

15 Goal-Based Songs for Speech, Movement, and More
Other therapeutic professionals utilize music daily including speech, occupational, and physical therapists. Musical Bridges staff are highly trained and have the necessary credentials to provide Music Therapy, but our community partners do not have this. This does not however mean that they cannot use music IN therapy. In collaboration with our community partners, we want to share our top pre-recorded goal-oriented songs. At Musical Bridges, we don’t often use pre-recorded music in our practice, so we also want to share some songs that can be implemented outside of Music Therapy at home and by other professionals live.
