Happy New Year 2021

Happy New Year, everyone! 2020 is finally coming to a close and we are all looking forward to a better year in 2021. While many things have seemed out of control this past year, it can be comforting to work towards something new and different. When making a New Year’s resolution this year, here are some musical ones to consider!

1. To listen to more music.

What are some steps to work on this goal? Listen to at least one song daily. This could be on a commute to work or school, in the morning, at night, during dinner, whatever works for you! Make music listening part of your routine. Rotate through different genres and time periods. Ask friends and family about their favorite songs and artists and check out each of their recommendations. Spend a week listening to throwbacks. Explore and learn about music from different cultures. Make a playlist for 2021 and add your new musical finds to it daily, so by the end of the year, you will have a great collection.

2. Learn a new instrument.

What are some steps to work on this goal? First, choose an instrument. This could be one you have laying around the house, something a relative wants to give away, or something new! If you are on a budget, you can find used instruments online at a discount, choose a relatively cheaper instrument such as the ukulele, or rent an instrument month to month from a music store. Learning a new instrument can be intimidating at first, but there are many resources online for beginners and we at Musical Bridges are here to help with virtual or in-person lessons! We offer music lessons to people of all ages and would love to help you learn something new.

3. Compose a piece of music.

What are some steps to work on this goal? Think of what your song should be about. Will there be lyrics? What instruments or sounds will be included? You could write chords and a melody, or you could use a background track from the internet to sing or rap along to. You could write the song on paper, on music notation software, or record yourself playing or singing it. Your music could be a story, an emotion, or something completely abstract. Keep the song to yourself, or share it with others!

Music can be such an important role in our lives. It is beneficial to set aside time to enjoy it on a daily basis however you prefer, through listening, singing, dancing, writing, or playing an instrument. Whatever your musical New Year’s resolution will be, we hope it brings joy to your 2021.
